Residential Construction Waste Demonstration Projects

As a part of its ongoing focus to reduce the construction and demolition portion of Georgia’s waste stream, P2AD is currently contracting with Southface (www.southface.org) to conduct two construction waste demonstration projects in the Longleaf Community, located near Phipps Plaza in Fulton County. The first project involves on-site separation of materials on the job site; the second project will entail land applying drywall. On-site separation of construction materials is not common practice in the Atlanta area due to smaller lot sizes which can’t accommodate containers/dumpsters, topography (sloped terrain), decrease in…

Residential Construction Waste Management Roundtable

Background The Department of Natural Resources’ Pollution Prevention Assistance Division (P2AD) contracted with the National Association of Home Builders’ Research Center (NAHB) to perform a windshield assessment of Metro Atlanta residential construction waste management practices and to co-sponsor a roundtable discussion of residential construction waste management practices in the region. An assessment of waste management practices was conducted at four residential construction sites on September 8-9, 1998. Health Care

Based on the volume of waste generated by healthcare facilities, the potential for waste reduction, and the national focus by EPA on healthcare, P²AD continues to devote resources to this priority sector. According to the American Hospital Association (AHA), there are more than 6,000 hospitals in the U.S. employing more than 4 million people. Hospitals generate more than 6,000 tons of waste per day, including mattresses, cardboard, food waste, mercury, photographic chemicals, formaldehyde, batteries, and solvents. In addition, P²AD-funded research estimates that hospitals in Georgia generate more than 6,419 tons…

Materials of environmental concern found in photofinishing effluents include cadmium, chromium, ferrocyanide, lead, and silver.
